    I've spent 42 years hiking nearly every portion of the southern Blue Ridge. Gorges is certainly up there. Another similar place that's a super well guarded secret, is the Cohutta Wilderness in north Georgia. It also receives borderline-rainforest levels so it has a very similar look, but what makes it amazing is how vast and remote it is. It combines with the Big Frog Wilderness (across the Tennessee line) to form the largest continuous wilderness zone in the Eastern United States. There's VERY few paved roads in the area, and not many forest service roads either. It's truly remote. SOOOO many streams. Here's things in Cohutta that are hard to find elsewhere: #1- small waterfalls that are still basically undiscovered that don't have names, #2- old growth forest that can't be found on Google completely unknown patches to the public. #3- rare species like the Blue Ghost Firefly and Synchronous Firefly that (again) Google will claim are "only in western NC" but in reality, they're in Cohutta too if you know the secret spots. #4- Unbeleivable trout streams that get virtually no fishing pressure. #5- mindblowing campsites all to yourself. #6- America's most diverse moth species population (nearly 900 moth species have been identified in the Cohutta). #7- America's most diverse mushroom species population. And on and on. It's an absolute gem, and it has hiking trails where you'll be the only person you see all day. Stay in the town of Ellijay or Blue Ridge (both extremely cute small mountain towns in North Georgia, lots of great restaurants/wineries/etc). Use those towns as your base camp, and experience one of the last truly unspoiled stretches of American wilderness. Cheers!

    • @GlobalFlareTours
      @GlobalFlareTours 7 месяцев назад

      Dig a little deeper my friend - the technical definition of a rainforest is 80+ inches of rain per year, and the only place in the Appalachian mountain region that gets at least that much rain every year is the area around Gorges State Park - pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/0494/ (the article you posted above says that the 'Appalachain temerate rainforest' gets over 60 inches of rain each year - that's not enough)

    Underrated city, probably because it is far from both east and west coasts so it’s a bit hard to get to and go by for much of the population. I was pleasantly surprised when I stopped there (the Durham Museum is a gem!) and would like to visit again sometime soon.

    The strength of Belmont is really the people. Businesses come and go. The growth has brought a lot of problems. We miss wonderful places that used to be here and are long gone. Taxes are high. But it's still nice to walk into some businesses and they know your name. Everything is close by which is convenient ( as long as you don't have to go somewhere in rush hour!). Sad to see a couple of people on this vid no longer with us. Development has made us crowded and noisier. The Abbey and Sisters of Mercy ministries - jewels in our crown for sure.

    One of the many things I dislike most while watching these types of videos are the artificial inflections and raised voices. It’s not like that with this video. I love your relaxed and calm voice. It’s pleasant. Instead of you standing out above all and drawing attention to yourself, I am drawn to into the subject, Savannah, and I just relaxed and enjoyed. Thank you!
